The Big 2025 Switch Off

Openreach have announced that PSTN and ISDN networks will be switched off in 2025 in favour of IP services such as VoIP.

If your business runs on a fixed line, you will be affected. As of September 2023 you will no longer be able to install or add lines to existing ISDN or PTSN services. These legacy systems are now deemed out of date, as are the associated maintenance and running costs.

My business has PSTN/ISDN networks – what should I do?

There are still many businesses currently unaware of the change and demand will increase the closer we get to the Big Switch Off. To avoid finding your business without a phone system you should prepare now.

All businesses currently using PTSN or ISDN lines for their telephone communications will need to switch to IP based services such as SIP or VoIP.

SIP is a protocol used in voice over internet protocol (VoIP) and allows calls and video calls to be made over the internet.

There are many advantages to SIP and VoIP services:

  • Not being tied down to fixed line and location – take your number anywhere

  • Mobilisation of your business communications – always available mobile workforce

  • Collaboration tools to work smarter

  • Help to reduce call costs
